Engine failing to start after idle stop

Anyone had their engine failed to start after idle stop engaged? I have had this happen 3 or more times over last 2 weeks. Essentially, engine tries to start but fails, causing me to have to put the car in Park and hit start button. Rather frustrating as this takes time and causes cars behind you start honking.

Yes, I have had this happen several times - randomly, intermittently. Happened approximately 6 times in the 2 years I've had the car, and always when I hit the start-button after the engine stops at a stop light. Although there have been several times where it really chokes starting up with just the gas pedal that I think it won't start - which is why I started using the start button so I'd have time to "fix" it before the light changes if it doesn't start. I talked to the dealer about it - said there is nothing I can do to permanently disable that feature.

I had this happen for the first time last night. It had a real hard time restarting even after going to Park and hitting the start/stop button. I'm not sure if it's related to the car not being started for a week. Just what you want at 2am after travelling all day. I won't be using it until I go for my next service. Maybe they've seen it before.

Add me to the list. It has happened to me about 5 times now over the past year. Each time it happens, I immediately take it to the dealer and they cannot find any error codes. They have tried a few software updates, but the problem keeps coming back. I have never had a problem getting it restarted, once the panic of having a dead car in traffic subsides.

The dangerous aspect is that if you are on an incline when it happens, it starts rolling backwards whenever you take your foot off the brake.

Agreed - this will work in an Auto Idle ACTIVE scenario. But when Auto Idle fails to restart; hill assist is disengaged (the car thinks it has restarted) and pressing the accelerator does nothing for a dead engine.

Attached is a picture of the dash after failing to restart.
  • I do not believe this dash situation can be duplicated manually. I.e. it is generated only by an Auto Idle Restart failure.

Mine did it again tonight when I forgot to disable it. That's the second time in about 5 days. Once it happens, the start/stop button doesn't do anything. I need to put the car in park and hit the start/stop button a few times before it restarts again. I'm guessing the car needs to cycle from off, acc, and then start. That's the only thing I can think of that would require me to hit the start/stop button a few times before it starts.

When I get my transmission replaced next month, I hope they have a solution for this. Sitting at a stoplight hitting the start/stop button a bunch of times isn't ideal.

That shift to park message is indicative of car wash mode, I think. I have seen it when I accidentally shift to neutral instead of park, and then press start/stop. That isn't meant to say that is what you did, but it might help figure out what is going on. For one thing, with that message, I would expect to have to shift to park before it would start.

So my wife's TLX went into Engine Idle at a stop and then automatically went to Park.
FYI, it is currently -21 C ( -6F) here.

She had to press the Start/Stop button to get going.

Is there a fix for this yet?

Now I am really thinking to get the transmission software recall done. Maybe this will take care of this issue?

Here are my temporary fixes. I have not tried them yet

the simplest solution is to put the Auto Idle Stop button off every time you start to drive.
Unfortunately it comes ON every time you start the car the first time.

other options are
1. Leave the air on the front windshield
2. Set the temperature to Hi or Lo
3. Put car in Sport+ mode

I was in the neighbourhood today so I stopped in and spoke to the service advisor at the dealership about my idle-stop issue. He's said that they've had a few come in and all have been related to the battery. Once the battery was replaced, the idle-stop returned to normal.

They will have a look when I go in for the transmission replacement next month.

Like you said, they gave me a new battery. It tested only 100 CCA instead of 650! I am amazed the TLX even started in cold mornings. Never had such a poor battery in any of my cars. I have even thrown out batteries with 350 CCA when they were 5 years old!

However, on the way back, at only -5 degrees celcius, the car would not go into Auto Stop idle. A message says that it cannot enabled (not exact wording). I put Auto stop on and off again but that made no difference and got the same message again.

I also got the transmission software update. I was surprised that I got a small jerk from 2nd to 3rd gear, something I never had before. But it got a little better as I drove. Maybe the transmission needs to relearn?

With your idle-stop issue, it's on be default. So what you're saying is that when you stop the car, the car wouldn't shut off? When the idle-stop is manually shut off, there is an orange light in the dash to show it's off and you'll get a message to say it's disabled. I'm just curious as to when you get the message to say it can't be enabled.

I got the battery replaced yesterday and the idle-stop issue appears to be resolved....so far at least. While the service advisor said the battery tested within the acceptable range, it's the first thing that the Acura Tech line tells the dealerships to change if the car fails to restart when the idle-stop has been engaged. He said that they've done a few and all of them were fixed with the battery swap.

We'll see..... As I said, so far it seems to be better.

Well finally took mine in for Acura to look at the issue. They called me today and said it now is saying "Idle Stop Unavailable", so they want to keep it til Monday when they can talk to the tech line. I told them about others getting the battery replaced and they are going to run a full battery test Monday also. I will let everyone know what they find.

Happy New Year All!

Finally got my car back after 5 days and a lot of diagnostics. The problem was a bad starter, which they replaced under warranty. Only had the car 1 day and so far no issues. Glad it's fixed but wonder what caused the starter to go bad in just a year. Wonder if the extra starts caused by idle stop puts too much wear and tear on the starter motor.

Great news but if you are wondering why it failed... well stuff fails... on the flip side I don't recall hearing other users having starter issues so seems like you just got the 1:1000000 lemon. Thanks for taking one for the team :)
