Maybe this has been discussed at nauseum already but I currently own a 2016 ILX, I love the car since I live in NYC and it's easy to park, very good fuel economy, and it's fairly fun to toss around. I drive maybe 9k miles at most a year so I am leasing an ILX Premium at the moment. I used to have a 2016 RDX base but only had that for 1 year but traded it in for the ILX since I rarely carried anyone at the time and parking it in my very very small garage was a pain. My lease is up in 15 months and I always told myself I would like to keep the ILX and just buy it back but after recently getting married I started to think maybe a slightly larger car would be better.

So how much bigger is the TLX compared to an ILX? Coming from an RDX my brother and others sometimes complain about space in the ILX. I am not too concerned about people per se but rather car seats. Can the TLX comfortably fit a rear facing car seat?

Performance the 4 Cylinder 8 Speed is just enough power on the ILX, how do you find it on the TLX? I heard there were a lot of issues with the 8 speed for the TLX. I always loved Honda's 3.5 but again I heard the ZF 9 speed has also had issues?

Does anyone have the SH-AWD version? Worth it?

My guess is that the TLX isn't that big of an upgrade in terms of space and features to warrant upgrading and going to an RDX is kind of too big still. I wish Acura had a HR-V version being released soon I think that would be perfect.

ILX and TLX makes a huge difference in terms of size and space. I always got ILX as a loaner, so I know how ILX drives and how it feels inside. I always thought it's too crammed inside and it drives too harsh over bumps.

As for the power, you need to test drive and decide yourself.

But seeing how you felt RDX to be big(TLX is actually 15.8cm longer than RDX) and HR-V as a perfect fit, you might be better off researching more models from other brands as well. Infinity has QX30 that might be perfect for you. It's basically same as the benz GLA. :)

If you thought the RDX was too big, then you'll find the TLX is too big.

To answer your questions, yes it would fit the rear facing car seat with no problems. The SH-AWD is worth it for me but it may not be for you. It handles great and is awesome int he snow. It suits what I was looking for. The transmission issues that some were seeing seem to have improved in the 16s and 17s.

Definitely drive them both and see what you think.

Did you consider the new Civic? It is likely slightly bigger than your ILX but not big enough that it would be a pain to park.

The new Civic is very nice. Honestly, I think it's actually more refined in the NVH department than the ILX, which is getting kind of long in the tooth (the ILX is built on the previous generation Civic platform and uses a lot more hard plastics than you would expect). It's good enough that when we were looking at cars for my wife, we were cross-shopping the TLX with the Civic Touring model. For the same price and same options, I would take the new Civic over the ILX any day of the week. It's that good.

That being said, the next gen ILX (2018?) should be REALLY good since the new Civic will be a much better starting point than the last one.

Seriously I would have best the RDX was longer.... I see the RDX has only 2" more on ground clearance, I would have though it would have been more, just shows how little I know beyond the world of my TLX.

Agreed on all points! I tested the Civic Touring and Hatchback Sport Touring and I really liked the latter a lot but there were no lease incentives at all. It would have cost almost as much as TLX tech. It was too close for me and I was mostly doing it bc I thought I was going to love Android Auto but did not. Oh and I think we'll get the next ILX as at 2019 MY, in mid to late 2018.

Yup, RDX definitely felt roomier than TLX both in front & back when I test drove it.
I guess the length is longer due do the front overhang / trunk length.
I think a lot of it is psychological due to the extra headroom you get in the RDX. Believe it or not, you actually get more front legroom and front hiproom in the TLX than the RDX, which has a shorter wheelbase by almost 4 inches.

I agree about the headroom. It does make a difference, plus you sit higher, so gives you more view which adds to the sensation of being in a larger vehicle.

Just did a quick search on acura.ca and found these.

RDX:
Hip room – front/rear
1415/1367 mm
Legroom – front/rear
1068/973 mm

TLX:
Hip room – front/rear
1405/1394 mm
Legroom – front/rear
1082/876 mm

It's interesting that RDX has a significant more rear leg room (9.7cm / 3.82") than TLX.
