Update to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto possible?

Honda unveiled a midlife update for its midsize Accord, a lightly freshened model that will play nice with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Can our TLX's be updated to this new capability?

I would suspect that the update provided with the 2016 Accord does not involve any drastic hardware modification. The Software should be able to be ported over to our current systems so that we could enjoy this new capability.

With the bashing of the dual screens for Acura/Honda, I think the pundits will be eating their words when they see the benefit of both screens with this new interface.

Apart having Google Maps on screen with CarPlay, what is the benefit of this stuff ?
Audio control from steering wheel works with bluetooth - Siri is available from the car - Messages are displayed/told by the phone with possibility to answer them (with Google Voice).
... And to have map on-screen you just have to put the phone in front of the display ;)

I don't see a lot of innovation coming from CarPlay and Android Auto.

Another point of view, being able to control with gestures and HUD adds a really interesting point in Navdy

But I confess I found infotainment a little old/passed... but still functional. And after all it is all I ask to it, being functional (even if I love bells and whistles ;) )

One huge benefit for me would be voice commands. Voice commands completely suck on the TLX and most other cars. It's not accurate at all and why do I need instructions on how to use it every time I press the voice command button.

Using voice commands with Google Now or Siri would be so much better and so much more accurate. Maybe I need to look up how to use Google Now from the car, as you stated. How do you do that?

I have no issues with the navigation on the TLX, works great for me. But using Google maps on the screen would be better.

I agree with you @Replayman. I guess it is the geek in me that wants the latest. For my last road trip, I had all that I needed with the built-in infotainment.
The only issue I have right now is the lack of replying to a Text with canned responses (IOS).

@Replayman - By "Google Voice" do you really mean "Google Assistant"? Google Voice is a service that manages a virtual phone number. If you really do mean "Google Assistant" (so you could say something like "OK Google...what is the weather in Chicago") how have you been able to get this to work for you? Are you simply using your phone standalone or do you issue the voice command and receive the response through the infotainment system? How are you passing the voice command to the phone and how is the phone responding? For example, if I'm listening to music via my USB the system isn't communicating with the phone via bluetooth at that time.

Today technology is all about 2 things, it's ability to connect to the world around us and the ability to be updated as needs change. Out phones, TV's, computers, and even many children's toys have software that can be updated. Tesla obviously already has jumped into this arena so why not Acura? Acura would be smart to readdress their viewpoint and actually respond to posts like this. Speaking as someone who has been a technology executive for 15 years, I'm fairly disappointed that talk about updating the systems on cars like the BRAND NEW TLX to incorporate Android auto and Car Play isn't even happening while the Honda accord comes with the functionality.

I'd love this update. Why? I find the built in nav almost impossible to use from voice prompts and even though system supposedly comes with traffic updates, I've not experienced any benefit compared to using Google Maps or WAZE. Not to mention how sluggish the controls on the entire entertainment system are. Manufacturers talk about eh driving experience. Well the more I'm able to focus on the driving and not how acura built an infotainment system that falls far short of the industry standard, the better

Welcome to the forum.

I don't think that Acura is the only company that doesn't retroactively update their infotainment systems as new features/capabilities are released. I believe that most mainstream companies follow the same model. Yes, Tesla does advertise that they do, but I'm not aware of the other major manufacturers doing this.

You mention the Accord. The previous year Accords will not be retroactively updated.

Honda is incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with their model refreshes and I would think that Acura will do the same. As with Honda though, I doubt very much that there will be updates for vehicles from previous years.

A lot of this advanced technology also has to find a way to side step the various legal regulations with regards to the various distractive driving laws, and what you can actually do in the car while driving (media, browse the net, etc). Id be happy if Acura used something other then Bing maps lol.

I worked for a company that provided in dash entertainment as a fledgling company to car manufacturers. One thing that you need to remember... The car manufacturers work about 3 YEARS in the future. They are readying the 2019s NOW. Unlike other industries, they do not drop on a dime and just put the latest thing in there....

If anyone knows anyone from the car business they will know this... This is why things like CarPlay aren't available yet.

I always wanted carplay also!

I'm not sure it's even about "standard feature" as much as the things avail at different trims...Other than the Acura badge, an accord has almost everything available that the TLX minus the cooled seats and the SH-AWD...Even the top engine is only 12 less hp...

Yet you can get the driver assistance package including ACC for under $24K.

I Looooove my TLX, but after using Android Auto in a rental Hyundai Sonata, I can definitively say that this infotainment system is something you want! I'll tell you why:

  • Android Auto is beautiful! It essentially takes basic functionality over from your phone.
  • The Honda/Acura mapping software is stuck in the year 2000. Address entry is painful. Traffic updates are limited solely to data from other hondas/acuras, so is not very accurate and time delayed.
  • It is designed for optimal user experience and safety. Two things that are too easy to take for granted. Yes you can pair/mount your phone, but it is not safe at all to use -- trust me. Performing basic functions like music selection (or podcassts) or viewing quick notifications on your phone while driving is something people can't help themselves but do, and it is just not safe!!
  • The current infotainment system works, but it is a little slow and clunky, and when you use something that just works, it becomes glaringly obvious.
  • Appointment times and addresses pull up automatically, so you sit in the car turn on and its ready to navigate with stuff from your phone -- no input needed
  • awesome...

I agree. I was aware of what the TLX system was, as I had a 2013 Accord touring, but still, you would think that after the 13' accord came out in 2012, that by the time the TLX came out two years later on their "premium brand", Honda would have listened to the complaints and upgraded the thing to be at least a little more responsive. At least it sounds a lot better then my Accord stereo did. But it does feel like something running Linux back in 2000. Besides a few minor graphical changes, the 13'-15' Accord and TLX systems are identical, and I'm pretty sure the Acura buyer expects something better in their premium sports sedan. Now even the '16 Accord outshines it - mind you if have used it, it's still not perfect.

It's only software, it really shouldn't be hard to optimize or update it. The problem is the screen, you need multi-touch screen to really do Android Auto and That other one by crapple.

I have been looking at the reviews of CarPlay in the '16 Accord and am impressed. I had an instance last night where I wanted to save my current location to the address book, but I could not comprehend any easy way to make it happen. I then went to Voice Recognition, knowing the exact address. I ended up tuning to some strange AM frequency. Then I used the control knob to locate the point on the map and save to the Address Book. That got me the location on the map, but the address associated with that point does not exist (house number was +10 than the highest number on that street). I could not edit the address (had to be stopped to even attempt that procedure).
Since all my contacts are in my phone, I will never need to enter an address with the car interface when CarPlay is standard.
The frustration with the interface and the poor map display ("What is the name of the street I just passed?") will make me trade up when it is implemented in a future TLX. Honda really missed it with their interface.
My wife wants a new van. I'm trying to convince her to wait for the '17 Odyssey hoping that it will have CarPlay. I could not tolerate that interface on another vehicle!

</vent>

P.S. I have all Apple devices so Android Auto will not work for me.

I'm pretty anal about researching everything online, I noticed about a year ago they had some massive delivery delays, but recently it's been only good reviews. Usually, I read reviews for any product that are no more than 6 months old.

this is my research

Which is exactly where I got the warnings about this product

All I'm saying is that someone should do their research. I've read so many bad things in the past and as with any product it's tough to gain trust once you've burnt customers.

You have one and you're happy with it. That's great news. It looks like a great product if that's what someone wants.

Do you have any pictures of your install? Did you do it yourself? How we're the instructions?
