2023 TLX and Gas Octane

Hi Folks,

I don't want to start a raging discussion about Premium versus Regular, but hoped to get some insight from real world drivers.

I did not buy my car to stomp on it every chance I get (although Sport mode is really fun).

Acura states minimum 87 octane and I ran a couple of tanks and did not notice any difference, crazy thing seems to get better gas mileage.

Talked to my mechanic about turbo and gas octane, he said as long as manufacturer lists 87 as acceptable minimum, he has no problems with it.

Curious as to this forum's opinion / experiences..

Thanks,
Barry

I mainly use 87, 10,000km in and no problems at all!
One of the members here or on Acurazine has a 1st gen V6 and had to replace the cats due to the previous owner using 87 octane. I personally would not chance it.

As you know this issues has been debated and debated and debated. My experience? Have owned Acuras/Hondas forever and there is a 17 RDX and 21 TLX in my garage. Use 89 as a compromise. Have never notice a drop in mileage or performance. I did have a mechanic tell me that whatever octane you use...STICK WITH IT. Do not go back and forth. That is my 2 cents. Now prepare yourself for a lot of OPINIONS.
No problems here, go with what you think is best for your car.
To each their own, but in my opinion, we bought a "premium" automobile and spent thousands of dollars more for it. Saving $5 per tank on gas because someone wants to save money just seems pretty stupid to me if they've chosen to buy the car they did. Acura recommends 91 Octane. If the $5 extra for premium gas is worth the discussion to a person, it seems to me that they bought the wrong car.

That said, if you get stuck in a situation where premium isn't available, there's nothing wrong with putting in a tank of regular in a pinch.

Honestly I was just looking for people who are running the minimum allowable 87 in their 2021-2023 TLX and real world experience. I guess I did state opinion / experience in the original post, should have just stated experiences for those who are running 87.

Two of of the posts were very helpful and thank you.

Your manual states - Acura recommends premium and you are going to listen to your mechanic? Oh no, another post you don't find helpful. LOL.

This shouldn't even be an issue and debated. My Creds... 37 yrs in the oil industry (Marketing, Refining, Supply and Trading, Planning). If your car is unmodified (stock) then follow the manufacturer's recommendation. By the way, the recommendation often will recommend "Top Tier gasoline - the additive package" which is at least as important to longevity of your engine as the octane used.

Everyone can have his/her own opinion, hopefully based on FACTS, but if we think that we're smarter than the manufacturer, then there are a few bridges that you might want to buy.
Lets just say for an example that you need to bring your car in for engine problems such as knocking or an emission problem. Your vehicle is still under warranty and you have been using a lower grade of fuel, there is a chance that the dealership may deny your claim. There may be a slim chance of denial but why take it.
There has been at least one TLX owner (I believe on the Acurazine forum) who was denied coverage for her failed catalytic converters as it was determined that the previous owner used a lesser grade fuel than what was recommended.
Never give Acura or a warranty co. a reason to deny your claim.

Do you deny this possibility? When a premium fuel engine runs on regular fuel, there's a risk of combustion of the fuel mix before the spark plug even lights up. This causes a phenomenon called knocking, which is likely to damage the engine.

What are the benefits of premium gas?
Premium gas has a higher resistance to engine knock in luxury and performance vehicles with turbochargers or high-compression engines, so you can hit that horsepower smoothly. Additionally, premium gas can increase fuel efficiency, potentially bringing better gas mileage for longer while decreasing emissions.
Remember that these benefits are seen in vehicles that truly require premium gas and not necessarily in most other vehicles. Check your owner's manual to see what your manufacturer recommends for your specific car make and model, and note that the definition/label for premium gas can differ from state to state and station to station.
WHY SACRIFICE PERFORMANCE AND FUEL EFFICIENCY?

The information below is from the 2015 TLX Manual -
-Fuel Information ■ Fuel recommendation Use of lower octane gasoline can cause occasional metallic knocking noise in the engine and will result in decreased engine performance. Use of gasoline with a pump octane less than 87 can lead to engine damage. ■ Top tier detergent gasoline Because the level of detergency and additives in gasoline vary in the market, Acura endorses the use of “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” where available to help maintain the performance and reliability of your vehicle. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline meets a new gasoline standard jointly established by leading automotive manufacturers to meet the needs of today’s advanced engines. Qualifying gasoline retailers will, in most cases, identify their gasoline as having met “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” standards at the retail location. This fuel is guaranteed to contain the proper level of detergent additives and be free of metallic additives. The proper level of detergent additives, and absence of harmful metallic additives in gasoline, help avoid build-up of deposits in your engine and emission control system. For further important fuel-related information for your vehicle, or on information on gasoline that does not contain MMT, visit Acura Owners at owners.acura.com. In Canada, visit www.acura.ca for additional information on gasoline. For more information on top tier gasoline, visit www.toptiergas.com. ■ Fuel tank capacity: 17.2 US gal (65 liters).

Can you please provide any documentation, or the recommendation of professionals of the advantages of using a lower grade fuel than what is recommended by the Manufacturer????????

TLX -Unleaded Premium Gasoline - Pump octane of 91 or HIGER is recommended by the Manufacture.
The 2023 spec says 91 or greater, then why try and second guess the engineers? Especially turbo charged induction.
