2016 ZF 9 vs 2015 ZF 9

There are numerous threads talking about the ZF 9 in the 2015. Some are having issues and some aren't. I fall mostly into the latter.

I do feel a slight bump between 2 and 3 but nothing like what some of the other members have been experiencing. I got the latest Cdn update a few months ago and it improved the bump but as I said, it never really bothered me. It did seem less noticeable after the update.

I decided to take a 2016 SH-AWD Tech for a drive today to see if there is a difference. It was surprising to feel that the slight bump (in my case) is completely gone. It was probably the strangest test drive ever in the sense that I kept slowing down and starting at different speeds and in different IDS modes and the shift is completely smooth.

I explained to my sales person what I was doing when I got back and he said that I should tell the service dept which I might do next week. I'll probably just ask them to drive both and see what they feel. Mine is a very slight bump so they may say they don't notice any difference.

So...the point of this post is for the members who are having serious issues with the transmission. Drive a '16 and compare. If you experience what I did today, you'll see that it is different. Once you agree have the service dept do the same.

Absolutely. It should be interesting as more '16 owners become members to see if it's as hit and miss as the '15s are.

Its possible there are some mechanical differences in the tranny that wouldnt be advertised. Im sure all of the updates and/or even a new fresh OS the tranny uses smooths it out too. Does the tranny as a whole have a part # associated with it that might show how its different?

Like andre, I never really noticed much in the way of rough shifts, but more pronounced shifts in the Sport IDS mode for sure. Longer upshifts, more aggressive downshifts and throttle blipping. Now that the temps are dropping and Im driving more cautiously, Ive been driving in Eco and Normal and the shifts are seemless. I think some of the abrupt shifts "I" feel in Sport is just the nature of that modes programming.

I have a November 2014 build. The transmission was terrible. At the dealer 8 times for different transmission updates and tests. Acura replaced my transmission in October. (I am assuming with the same new build that is in the 2016s). Completely different. Not one hard shift. It is still clumsy sometimes but it is a 1000% better.

There is a mechanical difference and a difference in software - per what my service manager told me.

I was waiting for your comments @Wes Beard I know what you went through and I posted my experience today in a hope that some of the others in your situation would hopefully have something to compare it to at the dealer when the service depts tell them it's normal.

As @MTD said, I'm thinking there may be a different part number for the '16s.

I think you'd take a hit. It just depends how big of a hit. If you aren't happy with the car talk to them and explain why. Maybe they can work something out with the one you have or a new one.

Wes, Ive read all your posts and it seems like you had a real bad one lol.

I wonder if Acura or ZF will ever state what the actual changes and/or improvements are. With my Genesis Coupes, they had alot of teething problems with their trannys too. After a few years when they did start to fix the issues, the changes and improvements were actually mentioned in the tests and media/brochures for the cars so that potential buyers would know the problems are being addressed.
